Thorne Clark -- New York photographer

About Thorne Clark

Thorne Clark took up photography on the sidewalks of New York, New York, walking neighborhoods he had lived beside all his life and photographing architecture, parks, and streetscapes he had long stopped noticing. That is still the center of the work.

Clark retired in 2024 after a career as an airline pilot. Flying showed him many places and very little of any of them, and photography is how he has been correcting that. He now photographs street scenes, architecture, historic districts, and small towns, at home and on trips through the United States and abroad, and writes short accounts of the places he visits.

He walks with local photography groups and on community photo walks, where most of what he knows about the practice came from other people. His standard is straightforward: a photograph is worth keeping when it shows a place the way people who live there would recognize it.
